fucking stupid captchas!!!!!!!!!

Post 1 by robbiec12345 (Good night and Farewell ) on Friday, 10-Apr-2009 13:00:51

a while ago, i tried to sign up for a liveJournal account. but they had one of those stupid captcha things on the sign up form. okay so it did have an audio captcha, but because it was a javascript link, it wouldn't work! so i contacted lj support to explain the situation. this was over a month ago.

today, i finally get a response from lj staff basically saying i'm fucked! they said they couldn't create an account for me due to security reasons which i somewhat understand. but they basically said either keep trying the captcha system or get a trusted friend to set up the account. but i don't really have any "friends" that i'd trust with things like that because i can't change my password! i've tried contacting recaptcha but they've never got back to me!!!!!!!!!

i wish visual captchas like the recaptcha ones were banned or made illegal! i believe it's only illegal at the moment to not have an audio captcha but i may be wrong about that. why can't they make them like the zone's anti-spam system because that one is great!

right, rant over!!!!!

Haha, that sucks dude. I got an LJ account no problem, but I think that's because the audio thing worked for me. I don't honestly remember. I set it up so long ago and I never go on there. Good luck I guess? Haha, facebook got nasty with those too, but I just had sighted friends take care of it for me.

oh don't get me started on facebook. read my post in the topic about facebook in the geeks r us section. but yeh, i guess i'm just screwed *sighs*

Post 4 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Friday, 10-Apr-2009 17:09:09

as far as facebook, go to m.facebook.com and it's much more accessible. I love it!!

Post 5 by daileyt (Zone BBS Addict) on Friday, 10-Apr-2009 17:35:53

yah i hate those too!

Post 6 by Dirty Little Oar (I'd rather be rowing.) on Friday, 10-Apr-2009 18:00:46

Yeah, I just had the same problem with Twitter. I finally got a sighty to help me. The audio captia was complete bullshit. The thing kept telling me to type two words and what I heard was a string of 5 or 6 words. Which fucking two words are they talking about? They probably expected me to pick up some gibberish that was burried in the background static. Good fucking luck with that. Whoever thinks that recaptia shit is a good idea needs to put on a fucking blindfold and try to get past one of those things. It's fucking ridiculous. If I ever meet the fuckers responsible for that recaptia horseshit, I'm going to kick them in the balls.

I feel better now. Thanks for listening.

Toodles.

try www.webvisum. com. you need to install and run firefox to get the prog, but once you are logged as a user of livejournal, you can use the IE.

Post 8 by blindndangerous (the blind and dangerous one) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 0:37:12

Thank you smoky. My god, y not do a google search on how to solve these things. Its not fucking rocket science. Also, how manydamn times has web vissum been mentioned for catchas now on this site? Try looking around the geeks or us boards for topics concerning it.

Post 9 by shark (the zone's favorite, Canadian Great White) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 3:11:03

on facebook, once you sign up for facebook mobile, they stop spammming you with captias. but once again pocket penis, I guess you're about as screwed as a guy with no arms and no legs being thrown into the deep end of a swimming pool.
Have fun.

i've said this a thousand times before on the zone and i'll say it again, i use a braillenote and i don't have access to a computer!

Post 11 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 5:32:43

so you're kinda screwed as regards captures then. pocket pc, a braille note is no substitute for a laptop or even a netbook. the internet is not made with braille notes in mind, so i'd get a netbook if you want something portable. the nc 10 is quite nice, at around £330 gbp. dam nice with jaws, and superb with system access to go, which is free, or SA itself, which costs, but no upgrade fees after that, which is pretty ausom too. now web visum works on the nc 10 and the battery life is fucking amazing.

Post 12 by Mumbledore (... procrastinating again. i meant to write this days ago.) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 5:37:42

look robbie, you can iether do as martin suggested, get yourself a laptop. or, you can just ask someone to fill in the capture for you. as far as i'm aware, with livejournal and sites like that, you can change your password once you've created your account. you don't have to fill in a capture to do that.

Post 13 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 6:15:27

agreed with that.

Post 14 by robbiec12345 (Good night and Farewell ) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 6:41:41

from what i was told by lj staff, there is a captcha for changing ur password.

oh and my parents won't buy me a netbook or a screen reader. the only way i can use my home computer is with narrator and that's shit! i hate the xp voice as well!

Post 15 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 7:20:04

well you're stuck with what you have then. and why not save up money to get a netbook or a laptop. and why the hell did you get a restrictive bit of over expencive kit like a braille note anyway?

Post 16 by robbiec12345 (Good night and Farewell ) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 7:22:54

my braillenote was bought by my local authority for school but i use it at home as well. i wouldn't mind getting a pac mate or a netbook, but i don't think it's gonna happen anytime soon

Post 17 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Saturday, 11-Apr-2009 7:54:43

well, if you want to use a pc computer, when on the desktop, press windows key and r, then type www.satogo.com and follow the prompts. warning! the computer must be internet enabled and connected. download and run the software, and register for free if you want to save settings. there you've got a fantastic free screen reader from serotek, SA to go, and you can use the pc, then unload it from memory with insert and f four and leave the pc for others to use. then just visit www.satogo.com again to redownload the software. the software will unload every time you restart your pc, and you'll have to go the website again, but it's a solution if you wish to use your home pc.

I had a problem with signing up for live journal because of of that dang captcha. I also had a problem signing up with gmail for that same issue. I don't have sighted friends, especially ones I can trust, so I had a few online friends help me. I had my friend Jim, who I don't know very well, help me set up gmail. I had my good friend shaun help me over skype set up live journal. Believe it or not, both of these friends are blind, and they could use the audio captcha.

Post 19 by robbiec12345 (Good night and Farewell ) on Sunday, 12-Apr-2009 6:30:45

well i was thinking about getting someone from the zone to help but i'm not sure who i could trust. i have a couple of people in mind. i'll speak to them about it when they are next logged in as it's easier to use pqn's than standard private messages.

Post 20 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Monday, 13-Apr-2009 20:17:03

i've made the switch to firefox, and have used web visum already. absolutely brilliant.

I have somehow got by. The best tech support was from

www.pandora.com

There was no way in hell that I could set up my own account and they were so helpful!

Post 22 by turricane (happiness and change are choices ) on Saturday, 25-Apr-2009 7:28:51

i don't know if this goes here or in the geeks section. I wanted to get on that dam**** shi**** stu***** facebook. I can't get the capshit I mean capsha to work. It is supposed to be audio. No voice could I hear. I know lots of you use it and I feel like an ancient hag in hell. So is this m.facebook the same facebook as a regular facebook? My son has a blog about my new and only grand baby on it and I want to read it. Wetting my keyboard with the tears of frustration and hoping for an answer. and If this is off topic, I mean this lovingly bite me.

Post 23 by SEPTEMBER-TWILIGHT (CAN I TALK? PLEASE?) on Saturday, 25-Apr-2009 9:10:50

hahaha, I think the audio captcha on facebook is fine. But m.facebook.com is just exactly the same as facebook.com, its just no images, or any of the extra stuff. It's a lot less information. It was designed for people to go on with their cell phones so it would make it easy for them to view all the info on their pages and everything.

I love web visem too. its fucking amazing, lol

Post 24 by The SHU interpreter (I just keep on posting!) on Monday, 27-Apr-2009 21:55:24

oh captchas are damn stupid and retarded

Post 25 by AsianSensation (Veteran Zoner) on Tuesday, 28-Apr-2009 0:01:11

A very educated observation, if I may say so. ;)
All jokes aside however, captchas are not designed to exclude blind people from accessing websites. I'm not saying to give up, but the reality is that we are indeed a minority in terms of the larger groups that web developers cater to. Thus we have a tendency to get swept under the radar even if we aren't being actively excluded. I think far too many people don't think to consider that captchas are implemented to keep spam down to a minimum. Instead, they only worry about why they as blind individuals can't obtain equal access. I'm so tired of all this crazy propoganda on the web referring to captchas as "no blind people allowed signs" and instantly talking about litegation. This isn't a civil rights issue and really shouldn't be treated as such.

Post 26 by shark (the zone's favorite, Canadian Great White) on Tuesday, 28-Apr-2009 2:42:40

I recently got to try web visum, and now I'm a believer! I was helping someone sign up for a website that required a captia, and it really truly does make life a lot easier! The only thing I disagree with when it comes to it, is that you have to get either a member to send you an activation code, or you have to write in explaining why you want an activation code sent to you. That part of it is bullshit. But the rest of it, once you get it to work, rules! If you've got the latest version of firefox, you're all set!

Post 27 by tear drop (No longer looking for a prince, merely a pauper with potential!!!!!) on Thursday, 09-Jul-2009 12:28:17

Anyone know how to get around the capcha for a gmail account? All of my audio settings are correct, and the only reason I'm having to create a new account is because of some bs message that states my account has been disabled. Have no idea as to why?

Post 28 by chelslicious (like it or not, I'm gonna say what I mean. all the time.) on Thursday, 09-Jul-2009 13:18:25

robby: no captcha is required to change your password on live journal; I'm positive of that.

Jess: I'm not sure why it's not working for you. best of luck with getting it resolved.

Post 29 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Wednesday, 15-Jul-2009 22:49:27

The funny thing is that Captchas apparently aren't really all that effective anymore at weeding out spammers. Facebook and Myspace seem to be flooded with them and they practically swear by the Captcha. But I'm definitely a Web Visum baby when it comes to getting around those things. That was the only reason I switched over to Firefox for internet browsing, but then I got hooked on that too. I don't even use audio Captchas when they're provided because I can never understand them. Oh I understand why they're made that way but it still doesn't make things any less frustrating. At least Myspace now offers the option of being able to browse the site without getting them. Of course you do have to have a cell phone and be willing to supply your number and carrier, but it seemed worth it to me. You just supply that information and they'll text you an activation code. You enter that code in the box on the site and submit it and bye bye Captchas. And so far I haven't been bombarded with spam texts. Granted this may not apply to people who require Captchas for friend requests or messages, but there's still Web Visum for that. But it does eliminate the hastle of only being able to send, say, five messages per day before you suddenly have to fill out a Captcha for every one.

Post 30 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Thursday, 16-Jul-2009 6:21:05

oh yeah, web visom rules.

and when there's a server error or something like that, i just keep trying and it eventually works!

Post 31 by kool_turk (This site is so "educational") on Friday, 17-Jul-2009 4:21:46

And when you're at a computer that doesn't have webvisum? what to do.

Take a look at

http://www.solona.net.

It's quite easy to use

Post 32 by Feathered Serpent (I can't call it a day til I enter the zone BBS) on Thursday, 23-Jul-2009 19:27:40

was planning to bring that up.

Post 33 by BryanP22 (Novice theriminist) on Thursday, 23-Jul-2009 22:03:28

It's not as though Web Visum is particularly difficult to install. I make sure any computer I'm going to use has it installed just in case.

Post 34 by the illusive man (my ISP would be out of business if it wasn't for this haven I live at) on Friday, 24-Jul-2009 16:50:50

the only fucking difficulty with solona, is I couldn't get the goddamn automated tool to fucking instal! But besides that, everything works.
